Nivea Just Revealed Her Cancer Is in Remission Live on TV, and the Moment She Broke Down Will Move You

Nobody in that studio audience expected the news to hit like this. On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Nivea walked onto The Tamron Hall Show carrying an update she herself had barely believed just weeks earlier. Her leukemia, the same diagnosis she had gone public with back in July, was in remission.

When host Tamron Hall shared the news with the crowd, the 44-year-old singer became visibly emotional. Tears welled up, the audience erupted into applause, and Nivea, clearly overwhelmed, managed three words through the emotion: “I’m very grateful.”

The Moment That Stopped the Room

The Grammy-nominated R&B star, whose full name is Nivea B. Hamilton, sat beside her oncologist, Dr. Colin Vale, as she talked through the milestone. It was a daytime television exclusive, and it landed exactly the way you would hope: with a room full of strangers clapping for a woman fighting one of the hardest battles of her life.

Nivea admitted she could barely believe the news at first, because the diagnosis had arrived only a few months earlier. She knew the success rate of the drug she was taking, but as she put it, everybody’s body reacts differently to medication. Even with encouraging numbers on paper, no one could promise her this outcome. Now recent tests show the treatment worked, and remission, a major milestone for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, is finally hers.

It Started With a Knot in Her Side

Nivea first realized something was wrong when she felt a painful knot in her side. That knot turned out to be an enlarged spleen, and the swollen spleen led doctors to a leukemia diagnosis earlier this year.

In July, she chose to share the news publicly for the first time during an episode of the online show Cadillac Chronicles. She was candid and calm, telling viewers she had been diagnosed with leukemia earlier in the year and that treatment was going well. She closed her message with faith, saying she expected it to continue going well. Amen, she said. Amen, amen, amen.

Two days later, her representative identified the cancer in a statement to PEOPLE as chronic myeloid leukemia, or CML. Nivea revealed the diagnosis had been confirmed only after two bone marrow biopsy procedures, because the first one had not been successful. She said she was profoundly thankful the cancer was not in the blast phase, which would have meant chemotherapy as part of her treatment. Learning the cancer was not hereditary, and that she had done nothing to cause it, brought her relief mixed with puzzlement.

What CML Is, and What Comes Next

Chronic myeloid leukemia is a slow-growing type of blood and bone marrow cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, advances in treatment have enabled many people with the disease to achieve remission and live for years after diagnosis. Nivea is being treated with an FDA-approved targeted medication.

But she was honest on the show that the road is not over. Remission is a milestone, not a finish line. She described the experience as an adjustment, saying she is tired a lot and dealing with other issues, including bleeding and fibroids. As she told the audience, it is a long little list, but she considers herself on the better side compared to most. She is not complaining, she said. Not at all.

She Is Already Back in the Studio

Here is what makes this story sing: Nivea never really left the music behind, even at her sickest. She is currently studying audio engineering and preparing her first major music project in about 20 years. On the show, she even gave the audience a taste of her new song, “Ferris Wheel,” a signal that the R&B singer fans fell in love with in the early 2000s is still very much in the building.

The announcement joins a season of emotional music moments, from Shakira and Dua Lipa’s surprise Madrid duet to Celine Dion’s tearful return to the Paris stage. And like FKA Twigs reclaiming her voice this month, Nivea is writing her next chapter entirely on her own terms.

Her Village Carried Her Through

Nivea is a mother of four. She shares three children with her ex-husband, producer The-Dream, including twin sons London and Christian, and she has a son, Neal, with her ex-fiancé Lil Wayne. Through the scariest months, she says her village showed up. She has specifically thanked both The-Dream and Lil Wayne for supporting her through treatment.

Over the summer she told ABC News she was taking things day by day with a positive mindset and a heart full of gratitude, blessed with the ability to still do what she loves, keep raising her children, and learn new skills that fuel her. She has said more than once that she refuses to take any of it for granted.

From “Don’t Mess with My Man” to Tamron Hall

For anyone who came up in the early 2000s, Nivea is not a nostalgia act. She was one of the definitive voices of the era, breaking through with the Grammy-nominated smash “Don’t Mess with My Man” and the silky “Laundromat.” Her self-titled debut made her an R&B staple, and her voice carried a generation’s worth of slow jams and heartbreak anthems.

Then, like many artists of her generation, she stepped back from the spotlight’s glare to build a life. Now, two decades on, she is doing something most comeback stories never get: returning with a body of work built on the other side of a battle for her life. If “Ferris Wheel” is any indication, the wait might just be worth it.

The Bottom Line

Watch the clip and you will see it. A singer who announced her diagnosis in July, unsure of what the year would hold, sitting in a television studio in October hearing a room full of people clap for her survival. Nivea closed her original July statement with a simple thank you to everyone for the love and prayers. On Wednesday, it looked an awful lot like those prayers were answered.
