Harry Styles Just Credited an Ex-Girlfriend With Changing His Life, and Fans Think They Know Exactly Who She Is
For a man who just sold out thirty nights at Madison Square Garden, Harry Styles is remarkably open about how scared he used to be of simply going outside.
In a new conversation for Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians issue, published October 8, the 32-year-old sat down with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and revealed something fans have rarely heard him talk about: for years, fame made him feel trapped inside his own home. And the person who broke him out of it, he says, was a girlfriend.
The conversation started when Yorke told Styles he had been impressed the first time they met, because the former One Direction star was walking the streets of Rome completely alone, with no security in sight. Styles laughed and explained that a fearless version of himself was actually a relatively recent development.
“In the early days, when I was in the band, so much of the hotel experience felt very locked-in,” he said. “When I’d be home, it felt like, ‘Oh, it’s not safe for me to be out.'”
That is the part fans already knew. The part they did not know is what came next.
“If we just sit in my house for three days, she’s gonna think I’m nuts”
Styles told Yorke that everything changed when he started dating a girlfriend he described only as “very outgoing.” She was coming to visit him in London, and he had a sudden realization that staying locked indoors was not going to work.
“I was like, ‘Oh, if we just sit in my house for three days, she’s gonna think I’m nuts,'” Styles said. “So we walked everywhere, and it was this realization for me: ‘Oh, it’s fine to be outside.’ It kind of broke that thing.”
The shift, he said, has been enormous. “Now, it’s changed my life in such a big way, because it’s how you stay connected to the world,” he added.
Styles even described walking as a kind of philosophy now. He said he had read something about walking being “the artist’s perspective,” because at ground level you notice things you would completely miss from a car. For a songwriter who built a career on observing the world, that was not a small thing. It was the missing piece.
A fame prison he was never supposed to escape
To understand how big a confession this is, it helps to remember what Harry Styles’ life actually looked like at the peak of One Direction. The band formed on The X Factor UK in 2010 and became one of the biggest acts on the planet almost overnight. With that came hotel lockdowns, screaming crowds outside every venue, and an understanding, shared by the whole group, that going outside was not worth the risk.
His former bandmate Niall Horan recently echoed that reality on Audible’s “People, Just People” podcast, calling it “heartbreaking” that they never got to explore the “amazing cities” they visited, and admitting he felt like a “prisoner” at times.
Styles carried that habit home with him even after the band went on hiatus. The fear of being seen became his default, long after it was necessary. That is why this interview hits differently: it is not a celebrity complaining about fame. It is a celebrity admitting fame broke something in him, and crediting a girlfriend with fixing it.
So who is the mystery ex?
Naturally, Styles did not name her. And naturally, fans are doing it for him.
The strongest theory points to Taylor Swift. Back in 2012, during their brief romance, the pair were repeatedly photographed out on walks together, including a well-documented stroll through New York City in December of that year. The timing lines up with the era Styles was describing, and Swift, famously, is not a stay-inside type.
But she is far from the only candidate. Over the years, Styles has been linked to Kendall Jenner, Camille Rowe, Olivia Wilde and Taylor Russell, any of whom could fit the description. These days he is with Zoë Kravitz, and earlier this year reports claimed the two were engaged, though neither has confirmed it.
Styles himself has not weighed in on the guessing game, and honestly, the identity matters less than the point he was making. Someone saw a scared kid who had been famous since he was sixteen, and instead of letting him hide, she dragged him outside and showed him it was fine.
The proof is in the walking
If you have been following Styles this year, you can see the lesson in action. He has been spotted walking around New York City constantly over the past few months, just out in the open. On October 9, he was seen strolling through Brooklyn in light blue jeans and a navy tee, headphones on, hoodie over his shoulder, hours before performing at Madison Square Garden that night.
The interview also reveals he has been doing this for years. Styles told Yorke that while on tour in 2022, he once attended a philharmonic concert in Hamburg eight hours before his own show, wearing a surgical mask and moving through the intermission crowd completely unrecognized. He has made a habit of exploring local architecture on tour days, visiting cities he used to only see from hotel windows.
That is a long way from the twenty-something who thought it was not safe to leave the house.
Styles is currently deep into his thirty-show “Together, Together” residency at Madison Square Garden, which wraps with his annual Harryween show on October 31. After that he heads to Australia for shows in Melbourne and Sydney, closing out the first part of the residency run in December before returning in April 2027 for a full tour with multi-night stops around the world.
Somewhere in all that, it is easy to imagine him finding a quiet street between shows, putting the headphones on, and going for a walk. He has an ex-girlfriend to thank for that. And whoever she is, Harry Styles just made sure the whole world knows what she did for him.
