Tom Welling Accidentally Exposed Himself on Instagram, Then Had to Face Thousands of Fans the Next Day
Clark Kent has spent decades keeping secrets. He hides his identity behind glasses, changes in phone booths, and never once let the world see what was behind the mild manners. Tom Welling, the actor who played him for ten seasons, just pulled off the opposite of a secret identity in spectacular fashion.
On Friday night, Welling posted a cheerful little update to his Instagram Stories from his hotel room in New York City. The photo showed the skyline outside his window, tall buildings stacked against a bright blue sky, the streets below buzzing with life. He captioned it with two friendly words: “Hello, NYCC.”
The skyline was not the only thing in the frame.
Fans who looked closely at the image noticed something in the glass of the window. A reflection. Welling’s own reflection, standing in front of that window in what was very clearly not clothing. The actor who played television’s most wholesome hero had accidentally broadcast himself in the buff to his 2.3 million followers, and the photo stayed up for at least ten hours before it finally disappeared.
The screenshot that would not die
Ten hours is an eternity on the internet. By the time Welling took the Story down, screenshots had already spread like wildfire across social media, and his name was trending on X and Google Trends. One fan joked that the actor urgently needs a new PR agent, questioning how he had managed to miss the reflection before hitting post. Another outlet could not resist the obvious line: that was not very Clark Kent of him.
Welling has not said a word about the whole thing. His representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Page Six and other outlets, and as of Sunday the actor has kept his silence intact. The Story is gone, but the internet never forgets, and the timing could not have been more loaded.
Because the next morning, Tom Welling had somewhere to be.

First public appearance, hours after the slip
On Saturday morning, October 10, Welling walked onto a stage at the Javits Center in front of thousands of fans for one of the most anticipated panels of the 2026 New York Comic Con. It was called “The Road to Superman: 25 Years of Smallville,” a celebration of the show that made him famous, timed just ahead of the series’ 25th anniversary on October 16.
He did not walk out alone. Joining him on stage were Michael Rosenbaum, his old on-screen nemesis Lex Luthor, Kristin Kreuk, who played Lana Lang, Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane, and producer Julie Snyder. It was a full-blown reunion of the people who spent a decade in Metropolis with him, and the crowd was there for the nostalgia.
Smallville premiered on The WB in 2001 and ran for ten seasons before wrapping up on The CW in May 2011. For a generation of viewers who grew up in the 2000s, Welling’s version of Clark Kent was the definitive take on the character, the farm boy before the cape. The anniversary panel was supposed to be a warm walk down memory lane, and Rosenbaum even posted a cheerful video clip from the event on Instagram, posing with his old co-stars and writing about what a treat it was to be together again.
But every fan in that room had seen the Story. That is the thing about a viral moment: you can delete the post, but you cannot delete the audience’s memory of it. Welling smiled, answered questions, signed merchandise, and carried on like a professional, doing exactly what a seasoned convention veteran does. The panel reportedly went off without a single reference to the elephant, or rather the reflection, in the room.
The strangest twist of all
And here is the part that makes this story almost too perfect. During the panel, Welling himself brought up another nude photo incident, this one from way back during his Smallville days.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Welling told the crowd about the time his co-star John Glover walked into his makeup trailer with a big smile and a picture he wanted signed. The picture was from the internet, something a fan had made of Welling completely naked. Glover, who played Lex Luthor’s father Lionel on the show, held it out and asked a simple question: is this really you?
Welling told what he described as a little white lie. He said yes. And he signed it.
The story got a laugh from the room, obviously, but consider the symmetry. Years ago, the actor signed off on a fake nude photo as a goof with a co-star. This weekend, a very real accidental one made him one of the most searched names on the planet. Nobody could have scripted the timing better, which is maybe why Welling chose to tell that particular anecdote on that particular day.

What this means for Smallville’s big anniversary
Lost in all the commotion is the actual occasion. Twenty-five years after it premiered, Smallville remains one of the most beloved superhero shows ever made, a series that ran longer than most of its successors and proved that audiences would show up week after week for a hero who had not yet earned his cape. The anniversary officially lands on October 16, and the cast reunion at Comic Con was the opening act of what will likely be a week of celebrations, retrospectives, and streaming pushes. The show is currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
Welling, for his part, has stayed busy since trading in the flannel shirts. He has appeared in films like Cheaper by the Dozen, The Fog, Draft Day, and The Choice, and has taken TV roles on shows including Lucifer, Professionals, and The Winchesters. Through it all, though, he has remained Clark Kent in the public imagination, the role that defined him and the one fans keep coming back to.
The accidental photo will be a footnote in that legacy before long, the kind of story he will probably joke about in a panel five years from now. But for one strange weekend in October, Tom Welling managed to do something Superman never could: he embarrassed himself on a global scale and then walked straight back into the spotlight the next morning, smiled at his old friends, and carried on as if nothing had happened. Now that takes some courage. Just maybe check the window reflection before posting next time.
