The New Girl Cast Just Walked a Red Carpet Together for the First Time in 8 Years, and One Actor Turned It Into His Apology Tour
For eight years, the loft at 4D stood empty. Last night, it felt like everyone moved back in.
The entire cast of New Girl, Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Max Greenfield and Damon Wayans Jr, walked a red carpet together on Saturday, October 10, at the 2026 Chrysalis Butterfly Ball at The Beehive in Los Angeles. It was their first red carpet appearance as a cast since the beloved Fox comedy ended in May 2018, and yes, the photos look exactly like the opening credits came to life.
But the best part was not the purple carpet or the poses. It was the reason they were all in the same room at the same time, which is one of the funniest celebrity mix-ups in recent memory.
Eight Years Later, and They Still Look Like a Family
New Girl ran for seven seasons, from September 2011 to May 2018, and quietly became one of the defining comedies of the 2010s. It earned five Golden Globe nominations and five Emmy nominations along the way, and it turned its core cast into household names.
Fans have been begging for some kind of reunion ever since the finale aired. So when Max Greenfield, who played the impossibly fussy and endlessly quotable Schmidt, went on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle on July 31 and said he had “seen scripts” written by series creator Liz Meriwether, the internet did what the internet does. It lost its mind.
Except there was one problem. There were no scripts.
The Script Scandal That Accidentally Built the Perfect Reunion

Meriwether shut the rumors down fast. Speaking to Variety on August 29, she made it crystal clear: there are no scripts, and there are no current plans for any kind of New Girl reunion. She joked that she did not even have scripts written for the projects she actually needed scripts for.
Greenfield eventually admitted he had “misread the email.” The reunion he was talking about was not a new season or a movie. It was a charity event: the 2026 Chrysalis Butterfly Ball, where the cast would gather to receive the Rising Phoenix Award. A real reunion, just not the one fans had imagined.
Zooey Deschanel had already been trying to lower expectations. In a USA Today interview on August 31, she explained that the event was “not a show” but a charity gathering, and she laughed that the rumors had been “made bigger” than reality. She also let slip that she texts her former castmates regularly and had hung out with Jake Johnson just the week before, so for her, at least, this was less a reunion and more a really well-dressed group chat come to life.
Zooey’s Stage Roast and Max’s Accidental Apology Tour
When the cast took the stage to accept the Rising Phoenix Award, Greenfield had to face his co-stars, and Deschanel did not let him off easy.
Thanking the organizers, she made sure to thank Max, she said, who “while organizing this announced that an actual New Girl reunion was happening and he made our lives so very annoying.” The room loved it. It was very Jess Day: sweet, sincere, and with a sting.
Greenfield took it like a man who knew he deserved it. He said now was probably not the most appropriate time to apologize, but he was sorry, and he admitted the mix-up had accidentally brought a huge wave of attention to Chrysalis and its mission. He added that he was grateful so many people showed up because of it.
He could not resist one more classic Schmidt moment, either. Accepting the award, he joked about the cast’s education, saying that of the six of them, none had graduated college except, apparently, Hannah Simone. Johnson piped up that he had graduated too, which, Greenfield implied, nobody believes.
Earlier in the night on the carpet, Greenfield admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that he should have kept it simple from the start: there was a New Girl reunion, and it was happening on October 10 in support of Chrysalis. Johnson, standing nearby, could not help himself: “He did such a bad job it was unbelievable.”
Honestly? That is the most Nick Miller thing anyone has ever said.
What the Rising Phoenix Award Was Really About

Here is the part that matters most, and the part Greenfield himself kept coming back to: the night was never about TV nostalgia. It was about Chrysalis.
Chrysalis is a nonprofit that helps people navigate the obstacles on their path to meaningful employment, and the Butterfly Ball is its big annual fundraiser. The Rising Phoenix Award given to the New Girl cast recognized the show’s central theme, starting over, and the people who make starting over possible in real life.
It is hard to think of a more fitting honoree. New Girl was, at its core, a show about a group of broken, weird, wonderful people helping each other start over again and again. Jess Day literally rebuilt her life in the pilot episode. That a charity built around the same idea chose to honor the cast is the kind of full-circle moment Hollywood rarely delivers.
Greenfield served as host and honorary co-chair of the event, which made his whole journey from accidental reunion-hoaxer to charity champion complete. He organized the night, flubbed the announcement, got roasted by his co-stars, apologized on stage, and still helped raise money for a good cause. Schmidt would have planned it this way. Probably with a color-coded binder.
So Will There Ever Be a Real New Girl Reunion?
That is the question everyone leaves with, and for now, the answer is still no. Meriwether has been consistent: no scripts, no plans. Deschanel has been consistent too: this was a charity event, not a pilot in disguise.
But here is the thing the cast proved last night. They do not need a script to be magic together. The chemistry that carried seven seasons is still there in the way they roast each other on a charity stage, in the way Johnson lights up laughing at Greenfield’s expense, in the way Deschanel can still turn a joke about someone being annoying into the sweetest moment of the night.
Sometimes the best reunion is not the one that was planned. Sometimes it is the one that happened by accident, on a purple carpet, in front of a room full of people raising money to help strangers start over.
Eight years after the finale, the loft gang is still showing up for each other. And for one perfect night, the rest of us got to move back in.
