Rosalia Just Sang En Pointe for Four Minutes Straight on SNL, Then Got Drenched in a Rainstorm, and Viewers Still Cannot Believe Her Voice Never Cracked

Saturday night live television is the one place where a performer cannot hide. No retakes, no edits, no studio magic to cover a shaky note. On October 10, Rosalia walked into Studio 8H for the third episode of Saturday Night Live’s 52nd season and did something so physically demanding that viewers spent the whole night arguing about whether it was even possible.

She sang standing on her toes. For almost four minutes. Without her voice wavering once.

Then she came back and sang in the rain.

She Sang “Reliquia” En Pointe for Almost Four Minutes

For her first number, the 34-year-old Spanish star performed “Reliquia” while appearing to hold an en pointe position for the entire song. She stood nearly motionless in a black plate tutu with a lace bodice, her posture so still she looked like a statue that happened to be singing.

Behind her, white curtains glowed with the shadows of orchestral musicians, which gave the whole thing the feel of a classical concert that had wandered onto a comedy show. As the song neared its end, a dozen dancers lined up on either side of her while strobe lighting took over the stage. Through all of it, she never left her pointe position. The stillness was the whole point, and she turned it into the defining feature of the performance.

Within minutes, social media lit up. Viewers marveled at how she could deliver her usual powerful vocals while holding a pose that would make most people’s legs give out in seconds. Some wondered if she was being held up by some unseen support. But fans who had caught her recently concluded LUX tour said this is simply what she does: the balletic movement she built into the tour’s choreography means she can pull off something this athletic without any artificial help.

Then Came the Rain

For her second performance, Rosalia chose “Magnolias,” the closing track from LUX, and it was the song’s first ever live television performance. This time the staging went in a completely different, elemental direction.

She appeared against a stark black backdrop in white, and midway through the song an in-studio rain shower erupted over her. Water poured down as she kept singing, soaking her hair and drenching her dress until it clung to her. If the first performance was about impossible control, this one was about surrender, and she sold both with the same commitment.

What “Magnolias” Is Actually About

The song is stranger and deeper than its beautiful surface suggests. In the chorus, Rosalia repeats “Tirame magnolias,” which translates to “Throw me magnolias” in English. She has said before that she is singing about her own death, and turning the idea of dying into something beautiful.

She has described the song as an ode to Anandamayi Ma, the Indian saint, teacher and mystic. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, she recalled hearing about a burial that was filled with flowers, where everyone present felt at peace and even joyful. It made her wonder about her own ending. Her answer: don’t be sad when she dies, just throw a party.

That is a lot of weight to carry into a three-minute TV performance. She carried it while standing in a downpour.

She Even Showed Up in a Sketch

Rosalia was not done with just the music. She also popped up in one of the episode’s comedy sketches, appearing in a thought bubble encouraging host Shane Gillis to leave his gravely ill mother’s bedside to go to a Jelly Roll concert at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Gillis’s hosting turn, for the record, drew a divided reaction online. His opening monologue sparked heated debate on social media, with some viewers defending his jokes and others criticizing them. Rosalia’s cameo, at least, gave everyone something to agree on: she can act funny too.

The Timing Is No Accident

This was Rosalia’s second full appearance as SNL’s musical guest. The first came back in March 2022 during her Motomami era, when she performed “Chicken Teriyaki” and “La Fama.” (She had also made a brief appearance alongside Bad Bunny in 2021.) Four years later, she returned with a completely different artistic identity.

LUX, her 2025 album, was recorded with a full orchestra and features lyrics in 16 different languages, supported by an ambitious five-act live show. Her LUX tour just wrapped after 57 sold-out dates, and Consequence named LUX the best album of 2025. Now the awards season machinery is starting to move: Variety reports she is already heavily favored to receive an album of the year nomination at the Grammys, with first-round voting opening this Monday. She is also up for seven awards at the upcoming Latin Grammys, and she is set to be featured on U2’s new album.

Most artists would promote an album like that with a safe, pretty performance. Rosalia sang on her toes in the rain instead. That is the difference between a pop star and an artist, and Saturday night reminded everyone which one she is.
