Amanda Seyfried Kept Dodging Every Elizabeth Holmes Question on the Red Carpet, and Her Bizarre Gala Night Finally Makes Sense
Amanda Seyfried Kept Dodging Every Elizabeth Holmes Question on the Red Carpet, and Her Bizarre Gala Night Finally Makes Sense
There is dodging a question, and then there is whatever Amanda Seyfried did on the red carpet at the Academy Museum Gala on Saturday night. The actress walked into the sixth annual gala in Los Angeles in a black strapless Prada gown dripping with Tiffany diamonds, and within minutes she was giving some of the strangest interviews of her career. Asked about anything connected to Elizabeth Holmes, she spiraled into philosophical riddles, talked about emus and hard cider, and at one point simply begged a reporter to ask her nothing at all. Even Seyfried knew how strange it looked. Under footage of one interview that landed on Instagram, she left a comment that has now been seen by millions: “What AM I even saying.”
Here is the thing, though. The whole awkward night suddenly makes perfect sense, because Seyfried is sitting on a secret she legally and strategically cannot talk about yet.
The “Interesting” Interview That Confused Everyone
Seyfried attended the gala just one day after the wide release of Nathan Fielder’s documentary You Can See Everything, which traces Elizabeth Holmes’ final days with her family before she began her 11 year prison sentence in 2023. Seyfried won an Emmy in 2022 for playing the disgraced Theranos founder in Hulu’s The Dropout, so naturally every reporter wanted her reaction to the new film.
When The Hollywood Reporter asked if she was finding interviews difficult at the moment, she agreed with a laugh, calling her life “interesting” and saying it was happening “for a good reason.”
“It’s interesting, yeah, it’s interesting,” she said. “But, for a good reason. I don’t know, I think everything that’s happening is meant to happen and everything, everyone that’s in your life is meant to be in your life.”
Then she kept going. “I’m meant to be here, and I get to go home tomorrow and I’m meant to be home and so on and so forth.”
Asked if her “interesting” life had made ordinary conversations harder lately, she answered with complete honesty: “Only of late.”
Then came the question everyone is talking about. When the reporter asked what she would prefer to be asked about, since there were clearly topics she could not discuss, Seyfried offered an eclectic menu of alternatives: “I like to talk about the emus. I like to talk about Halloween. And you can engage with me if you want to talk about all things having to do with apple pie and olives and really good hard ciders.”
Even Seyfried knew how strange it sounded. That is the moment that produced her now famous “What AM I even saying” comment.
“Don’t Ask Me Anything”: The Variety Encounter
If the Hollywood Reporter interview was awkward, her encounter with Variety was even more direct. According to Entertainment Weekly’s account of the night, Seyfried approached the reporter with a preemptive warning: “Don’t ask me anything! Do not ask me anything.”
When the reporter cheekily asked “About what?”, she answered flatly, “I got nothing to say.”
She did offer one answer that night, though, and it might be the quote of the evening. Asked what brought her out to the gala, she smiled and said one word: “Diamonds.”
The interviewer, seeing an opening, pressed on. “Tell me about these diamonds,” he said. “Because I can see everything.” The line was a nod to the title of Fielder’s documentary. Seyfried smiled, but she refused to take the bait. “I don’t know what you mean,” she said.

The Secret She Cannot Talk About Yet
So why was one of Hollywood’s most articulate actresses suddenly tongue tied? Because Seyfried is hiding one of the biggest surprises in You Can See Everything, and spoiling it would undercut the film that hit theaters on October 16.
Here is the spoiler, so look away if you have not seen the film. About halfway through the nearly three hour documentary, co directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, Seyfried appears on screen to portray Holmes in reenactments. She first shows up when Holmes watches The Dropout with Fielder and her partner Billy Evans. Later, after Holmes begins her 11 year sentence, Fielder calls on Seyfried to act as a stand in for Holmes. She becomes a genuine character in the story, spending time with Evans, speaking to Holmes on the phone, and helping Fielder process what he witnessed during his month filming the family.
In other words, the actress could not discuss the documentary because she is in it, in a role nobody knew about. Every evasive answer on that red carpet was a woman trying not to spoil a three hour surprise. No wonder she would rather talk about emus.
She has not publicly addressed her participation in the film yet, which means until she decides to officially let the cat out of the bag, expect a few more cryptic interviews from her.
What She Did Manage to Say
Seyfried did let a couple of small things slip between the dodges. Asked whether she has kept up with the real Holmes’ story, she answered vaguely: “On and off.” When Variety asked whether The Dropout could return for a second season, she laughed nervously and shut it down, but left the door cracked the way only she can: “I don’t think so. But life is long.”
She also weighed in on the possibility of ever meeting the real Holmes, noting that Holmes is getting out this year. “I don’t know,” she said. “Life is long. I think everybody’s going through stuff, so I don’t know, I don’t know; I love challenges.”

The gala itself was the perfect stage for all of this. The Academy Museum’s annual fundraiser drew more than a hundred celebrities, and Seyfried attended solo before flying home to her farm in upstate New York, where she lives with her two children.
In the end, the most honest thing Seyfried said all night might have been her comment under her own interview clip. “What AM I even saying.” She knew exactly how it looked. She just could not explain why, not yet. Keeping a secret this big while reporters circled her all night might be the most impressive performance of her career.
