Christina Applegate Just Revealed She Was Misdiagnosed With MS for Five Years, and Her Heartbreaking Reaction Says It All

For seven months, Christina Applegate had been gone. No new episodes of her podcast, barely a public word, and fans were left to wonder what was happening behind the scenes. On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the 54-year-old actress finally returned to her MeSsy podcast alongside co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and the update she brought with her was more shocking than anyone could have imagined.

Her doctor had walked into her room with what should have been the best news of her life: “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.”

Applegate was not happy at all.

A “Congratulations” That Brought Tears Instead of Relief

Applegate first announced her multiple sclerosis diagnosis back in 2021, and the news reshaped her entire life. She stepped back from acting, spoke openly about her worsening mobility, and became one of the most visible advocates for the MS community. Alongside Sigler, who also lives with MS, she turned her MeSsy podcast into a raw and honest space where the two stars talked about pain, fatigue, and the daily grind of living with a progressive neurological disease.

So when her doctor recently told her the diagnosis was wrong, it did not feel like a rescue. It felt like the floor falling out from under her.

“I was, like, not happy at all,” Applegate said through tears on the episode. “Everybody else was so happy.”

The reason is brutally simple. The devastating symptoms she has fought since 2021 have not vanished. If anything, they have steadily gotten worse. Losing the MS label did not bring her any closer to an answer. It just stripped away the only explanation she had.

“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of the sudden I’m better,” she told Sigler. “I haven’t gotten better. If anything, I’ve gotten worse.”

“I Am Back at Square One”

Applegate did not sugarcoat where she stands now. She admitted she still relies on a wheelchair for basic mobility, including trips to her own doctors.

“I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office,” she said. “I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”

That is the cruelest part of this revelation. For five years, Applegate believed she knew what was happening to her body. Now she is back at the very beginning, with no idea what is actually wrong. She said her doctors are launching a fresh investigation into everything that has happened since 2021 to figure out what went wrong.

“That’s going to be an online investigation that my doctors are going to be getting into just to find out what has been going on since 2021, why did this happen?” she said.

She also noted that she had “every symptom” of someone with MS, and that doctors have told her many different conditions can mirror the disease. It is clear now, she said, that “something different, something else is going on.”

“I Lost Everything”

Then came the part of the episode that stopped listeners in their tracks. Applegate got emotional talking about how the original diagnosis had upended her life for the past five years, and the confession that followed was devastating in its honesty.

“I’ve gone through a great depression because of it. But I lost everything,” she said. “I lost my job. What do you say to someone who’s been living with this for six years, God, I’m so sorry, because it stopped my life.”

Beyond the physical strain, she admitted to a deep sense of guilt about her place in the MS community she had become the face of. Alongside Sigler, she had become one of the most recognizable advocates for the disease, and losing the diagnosis left her worried she had somehow let her supporters down.

“It’s weird because I feel like I let everybody down,” she said. “It’s this weird feeling because I became this, you and I, the poster children for MS.”

Applegate revealed she still cannot walk from her car to the doctor’s office, five years after her original MS diagnosis.

From Sitcom Star to Hollywood Survivor

To understand why this news hit so hard, you only have to look at how much Applegate has already survived. She grew up on television as Kelly Bundy on Married… with Children, one of the most iconic sitcom roles of the 1990s, then reinvented herself as an Emmy nominated leading lady in Samantha Who? and later Dead to Me, the Netflix dark comedy that earned her some of the best reviews of her career.

She battled breast cancer in 2008 and became an advocate for early detection. She fought her way back to a career peak with Dead to Me in 2019. Then the MS diagnosis in 2021 forced her to step away from acting almost entirely, just as she was reaching new creative heights. Her story, much like Ellen DeGeneres opening up about life after television on the Graham Norton Show, is a reminder of how fragile even the brightest Hollywood careers can be when health intervenes.

What Happens Now

The update comes after Applegate spent several months in the hospital earlier this year, a stay that kept her off the podcast for seven months and raised alarm among her fans. Now she faces a new and uncertain road: more tests, more doctors, and the long hunt for the real answer behind symptoms that have only intensified.

Applegate says her doctors are now reinvestigating everything since 2021 to find the real cause of her symptoms.

If there is one thing Applegate has proven over and over, it is that she faces the truth head on, no matter how painful it is. She could have hidden this news. She could have quietly moved on. Instead, she sat down with her co-host, cried on air, and told her listeners the whole uncomfortable truth.

Fans have already rallied around her on social media, flooding her with messages of support and reminding her that she has let no one down. The MS community she championed is standing by her, and her honesty about depression, loss, and confusion may end up helping more people than she knows. This story, like the stars who gathered at the 2026 Golden Heart Awards and the Academy Museum Gala, shows the human side of Hollywood at its most vulnerable.

For now, Applegate is not looking for pity. She is looking for answers. And after everything she has been through, nobody deserves them more.
