Ethan Hawke Just Confessed He Had a Crush on Drew Barrymore in the 90s, and Her Four Word Response Has the Internet Smiling

Somehow, after more than thirty years each in Hollywood, Ethan Hawke and Drew Barrymore had never actually met. That changed on Friday, when the 55 year old actor stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show to promote the second season of his FX series The Lowdown. And within minutes, the two were having the most charmingly awkward first conversation in television history.

Because Ethan Hawke walked straight onto that set and admitted he spent the 1990s hoping he would run into Drew Barrymore at parties. And that he cannot believe the two of them never dated.

What He Actually Said

It started the way these things usually do, with Hawke saying he felt like he had known Barrymore forever. “I don’t think I can remember a time in my life when I was not aware of you,” he told her. Barrymore lit up and shot back, “That’s how I feel about you!”

Then Hawke dropped the line that made the audience erupt: “What I can’t believe is that we never dated, you know?”

Barrymore did not miss a beat. “Where were you?!” she shouted, throwing herself back on her talk show couch. Then, for good measure: “Where were you, Ethan? What me and every other girl on the planet wouldn’t have given to date you. Where the hell were you?”

The 90s Parties Where He Was Looking for Her

Here is the part that gets good. Hawke confessed that back in the 1990s, there were nights when he would head out to a party with one thought in his head. “There was many a night, when I would, it must have been circa the ’90s, I’d be going to a party, and I’d think, ‘Maybe Drew will be there,'” he admitted.

Barrymore wanted answers. Why didn’t you just call me, she asked. “We still had phones back then.”

His answer? “You know, I like to play it cool. I wanted it to happen organically. I thought, you know, something magical would happen.”

And her reply is already one of the funniest moments of the year on daytime television: “And look what happened. Nothing!”

Hawke could only agree. “We’re meeting on a talk show.”

Two 90s Icons Who Somehow Missed Each Other

When you think about it, it really is strange. In the 1990s, Hawke was everywhere that mattered. Dead Poets Society made him a star in 1989, then came the Gen X landmark Reality Bites in 1994 and the romantic classic Before Sunrise in 1995. He was the brooding heartthrob of a generation.

And Barrymore? She had been famous since she was 6 years old, when she filmed E.T. By the 1990s she was carrying movies like Poison Ivy, Batman Forever and Boys on the Side, and living a life that was basically a permanent tabloid headline.

Two of the biggest names of the decade, moving through the same parties, the same premieres, the same Hollywood circles. And they never once had an actual conversation until now. It is the kind of thing that makes you wonder how many almost romances in Hollywood never happened simply because somebody was trying to play it cool.

Where Life Took Them Instead

Of course, life filled in the blanks. Barrymore has been married three times: first to bar owner Jeremy Thomas in 1994, then to comedian Tom Green in 2001, then to art consultant Will Kopelman in 2012. She and Kopelman divorced in 2016 and share two daughters, Olive and Frankie.

Hawke’s path was just as storied. He married actress Uma Thurman in 1998, and the pair welcomed Maya and Levon before splitting in 2005. In 2008 he married Ryan Shawhughes, with whom he shares daughters Clementine and Indiana.

So no, the 90s dream pairing never became a real life romance. But judging by the laughter on that couch, neither of them seems too broken up about it now. If anything, the confession gave Barrymore’s audience one of those rare moments where two celebrities stop performing and start being genuinely human.

Why This Moment Works So Well

There is a reason this clip is flying around the internet. It is not really about a crush. It is about two people who survived the most chaotic decade in Hollywood and came out the other side able to laugh about what might have been.

Hawke, the five time Oscar nominee, admitting he was once a nervous guy at a party hoping to bump into Drew Barrymore, is oddly endearing. Barrymore, shouting “Where were you?!” with her whole chest, is exactly the kind of unfiltered joy that made her talk show such a hit in the first place.

The Lowdown season 2 premiered on FX last Wednesday, and Hawke clearly came to promote it. But let us be honest. The promotion is not what anybody is going to remember from this appearance. What people will remember is two 90s icons, meeting for the first time in 2026, and instantly wishing they had met thirty years earlier.
