Florence Pugh Just Poked Jenna Ortega in the Face With Her Dress on the Red Carpet, and Her Instant Apology Is the Sweetest Thing You’ll See Today

It was supposed to be a sweet hello between two of Hollywood’s brightest stars. Instead, it became the most replayed red carpet moment of the night, and proof that even the biggest fashion moments can bite back.

Florence Pugh, 30, turned up as a surprise guest at the world premiere of Klara and the Sun on Thursday, October 15, held as the gala presentation at the 70th BFI London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London. She is not in the film. She simply showed up to support the cast, and ended up nearly knocking out its leading lady.

The trouble started the second Pugh went in to hug Jenna Ortega, 24, the Wednesday star who plays Klara in Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s beloved novel. Pugh’s dress, a pastel blue Rodarte gown from the brand’s Spring 2026 collection with embroidered floral details and sculptural, wing-like pointed shoulders, was designed to make an entrance. It made one, just not the kind she planned.

As the two actresses moved in for a hug, Pugh’s dramatic right sleeve connected with Ortega’s face. The moment was captured on video by MTV UK and shared on Instagram, where it spread like wildfire within hours.

What happened next is why everyone is talking about Pugh today. The Don’t Worry Darling star did not freeze, she did not pretend it did not happen, and she definitely did not keep walking. She immediately grabbed the side of Ortega’s head with both hands, checked on her, and blurted out an apology that is already becoming famous.

“Oh my god. I just bumped you in the face, I’m so sorry!”

Jenna Ortega Took It Like a Pro

To her credit, Ortega was the picture of grace. The 24-year-old smiled, waved off the mishap, and kept the interaction moving, proving she has red carpet poise to spare. Rather than making a scene, she simply introduced Pugh to her co-star Amy Adams, 52, who was standing nearby and welcomed Pugh warmly in return.

The three stars, joined by the film’s co-producer Rachel Forman, then posed for photos together, holding hands and laughing like nothing had happened. Adams looked stunning in a black floor-length gown with a draped white off-the-shoulder neckline. Ortega chose a custom gold Torlowei slip dress, a glossy lingerie-style gown with contrasting black lace embroidery on the bodice, delicate floral details cascading down the skirt, a plunging neckline and razor-thin spaghetti straps, finished with a yellow lace cap.

The trio’s good-humored group photo, followed by the viral hug video, gave the Klara and the Sun premiere exactly the kind of attention any film wants two weeks before it hits theaters. The film arrives in cinemas on October 23.

That Dress Deserved Its Own Red Carpet

Let us be honest: the dress was always going to steal the spotlight. Styled by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Pugh’s look was pure storybook fantasy. The pastel blue gown featured a sheer illusion base covered in brown and blue sequined floral embroidery, with exaggerated sculptural shoulders rising into wing-like points that gave the whole thing an ethereal, almost fairy-tale quality. She wore it with nothing underneath but teal underwear, Aquazzura Divine platform sandals and dainty Bvlgari jewelry, keeping her hair in a twisted half-up style with soft, romantic waves and her makeup natural and glowing.

The look was a bold fashion statement from a woman who has spent 2026 making them. Just days earlier, Pugh had appeared at a preview screening of her Netflix show East of Eden, where she takes on the role of literary villain Cathy Ames, in another Rodarte gown paired with a dazzling Bvlgari rubellite jewel. Her style choices keep getting bolder, and fans keep loving them for it.

Pugh’s surprise appearance at the Klara premiere came just days after she supported her boyfriend Finn Cole at a screening of his film In the Shadows at the same festival. The couple made their red carpet debut together earlier this month, and Pugh has clearly been making the most of London’s biggest film event.

Why Florence Pugh Even Showed Up

Pugh does not appear in Klara and the Sun, which raised the obvious question: why was she there at all? The answer seems to be simple friendship and professional respect. Pugh was seen chatting happily with actor and co-producer Rachel Forman, a longtime collaborator of director Taika Waititi, and with the cast including Ortega, Adams, Natasha Lyonne and others. Sometimes a star shows up simply because she loves the project, and the carpet is better for it.

The film itself is a major autumn release. Based on Ishiguro’s 2021 novel, it stars Ortega as Klara, an Artificial Friend who longs to find the perfect home. When she meets Josie, played by Mia Tharia, the two form a deep bond, and Klara’s innocent wonder and loyalty begin to heal a family dealing with loss and complicated grief. Amy Adams plays Chrissie, Josie’s mother. The cast also includes Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne.

The premiere was a starry night beyond the Pugh moment. Waititi walked the carpet with his wife Rita Ora, who drew attention of her own by wearing a mask with her ArdAzAei Couture dress. It was the kind of glamorous, slightly chaotic gala that only a film festival can produce, and the Pugh and Ortega moment gave it a human, funny center that no stylist could plan.

The Red Carpet Apology Hall of Fame

What makes this story stick is not the bump itself. It is Pugh’s reaction. In an era of carefully managed celebrity images, her instant, unfiltered apology felt real. She did not wait for her publicist. She did not try to laugh it off. She checked on Ortega first, face in her hands, and owned the mistake in the most Florence Pugh way possible.

Ortega, for her part, gets equal credit. Getting poked in the face on a red carpet could easily have become an awkward viral disaster. Instead, her easy smile and quick introduction of Pugh to Adams turned it into a heartwarming trio moment. The three women posing arm in arm with Forman afterwards looked like they had just shared a genuinely funny memory, which is exactly what they had.

Fashion will always be risky business on the red carpet. Sculptural shoulders may photograph beautifully, but they have a blast radius, and on October 15, Jenna Ortega found out firsthand. The good news: nobody was hurt, everybody laughed, and the movie got a viral moment money cannot buy.

The real winners here are the audience, who got to see three talented actresses being delightfully human, and Klara and the Sun, which now has the internet’s full attention ahead of its October 23 release. If you loved the starry looks at the Academy Museum Gala 2026 or the InStyle Imagemaker Awards red carpet, this premiere proved once again that the best red carpet stories are the unscripted ones. Sometimes the best publicity is an accident, especially when it ends with a hug and a heartfelt apology.
