Janet Jackson, 60, Just Stopped the Red Carpet in Sheer Black Lace, and the Reason She Was There Is Even Better Than the Dress

Some red carpet moments are about the dress. This one was about the dress, the woman wearing it, and the full circle moment it represented. Janet Jackson stepped out in Beverly Hills on Thursday night, October 22, and proved once again that at 60, she remains one of the most magnetic presences in music.

The occasion was the 2026 Dancers Against Cancer Gala of the Stars, held at The Beverly Hilton. And Jackson was not just a guest. She was there to hand a major honor to one of her dearest friends in the industry, Missy Elliott, in a moment years in the making.

The Dress That Stole the Night

Jackson wore a sheer black lace gown that stopped photographers in their tracks. The dress featured delicate scalloped detailing throughout, a plunging keyhole neckline, and shoulder embellishments that caught the light. It was cinched at the waist with a slim black belt that gave the soft, romantic look a bit of edge.

She finished the look with silver jewelry, including rings and large oval earrings, and wore her shoulder length blonde hair swept back from her face. Her makeup was classic evening glam: a wine colored lip, soft blush, and smoky eyes brought out with mascara and eyeliner.

Fans noticed, and they were not subtle about it. Comments flooded in calling her beautiful and stunning, with one fan writing that she is literally aging in reverse. Another simply said she looks incredible. It is hard to argue.

This was Jackson’s first major red carpet since the 2026 BET Awards back in June, and she clearly saved something special for the occasion.

A Full Circle Moment for Two Icons

The headline moment of the night was the award itself. Jackson presented Missy Elliott with the gala’s Icon Award, honoring Elliott’s contributions to music, choreography, and performance.

Here is what makes it special. Jackson received that exact same award in 2025. Returning a year later to hand it to her longtime friend and collaborator was a deliberate, meaningful gesture, the kind of passing of the torch that rarely happens so perfectly.

Noah Lands, the CEO of Dancers Against Cancer and the gala’s executive producer, said it well in the announcement: “Missy Elliott represents everything the Icon Award celebrates. Her groundbreaking artistry has inspired generations of performers, and having Janet Jackson, last year’s honoree, present her with this award makes the moment even more special.”

The pairing has deep roots. Jackson and Elliott collaborated on “BURNITUP!”, a track from Jackson’s 2015 album Unbreakable, and they shared the stage during Jackson’s State of the World Tour. Their friendship goes back even further, to the late 1990s, and one of its best stories involves a phone call.

The Time Missy Hung Up on Janet

Back in 1997, shortly after Missy Elliott’s breakout with Supa Dupa Fly, Janet Jackson called to reach out. Elliott did not believe it was really her. She assumed a friend was playing a joke and hung up the phone.

Elliott later recalled the moment in a 2022 interview, saying she told her manager in disbelief after learning it had genuinely been Jackson on the line. That awkward first call turned into one of the most enduring friendships in music. In 2022, Elliott shared how Jackson had flown from London to spend two days with her during the pandemic, just laughing together, a break Elliott said she had really needed.

Nearly thirty years after that hung up phone call, Jackson was standing on stage in Beverly Hills, presenting Elliott with one of the biggest honors of her career. Some friendships just get better with time.

Missy’s Legacy Speaks for Itself

Elliott’s Icon Award adds to one of the most decorated careers in music history. She is a four time Grammy winner. She was the first female rapper inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the first female hip hop artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She was also the first female rapper to receive the MTV Video Music Awards’ Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Her commercial record is just as strong: ten top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and five top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. And her videos, from “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” to “Work It”, remain some of the most influential dance driven visuals pop music has ever produced. For a gala centered on dance, there could not have been a more fitting honoree.

The Cause Behind the Glamour

The Gala of the Stars is the annual flagship fundraiser for Dancers Against Cancer, an organization that provides financial aid to dancers, dance educators, and their families who are affected by cancer. Beneath the glamour and the designer gowns, the night raises real money for people in the dance community facing one of the hardest fights of their lives.

Jackson’s presence carried extra weight because of that mission. She has built her entire career on dance, from the sharp, military precise choreography of “Rhythm Nation” to decades of arena shows. Few artists alive understand what dancers give to the art form, or how vulnerable they can be when illness strikes.

The Other Stars of the Night

Elliott was not the only legend honored. Toni Basil, the singer and choreographer behind the infectious 1982 hit “Mickey”, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while acclaimed director and choreographer Vincent Paterson took home the Vanguard Award. People also reported honors for Hilaria Baldwin and the late Chita Rivera.

The evening was hosted by Dancing With the Stars veteran Maksim Chmerkovskiy, with Paula Abdul returning as a presenter and Liza Minnelli serving as honorary chair. Chloé Arnold’s tap group Syncopated Ladies performed, keeping the night’s focus exactly where it belonged: on dance.

Janet Is Having a Moment

The gala capped off a busy month for Jackson. Just eleven days earlier, on October 11, she performed an hour long set at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, her first concert in Singapore in 15 years, according to The Straits Times. Dressed in all denim, she ran through hits including “Rock With U” and “Control” for the race weekend crowd.

At 60, Jackson is doing what she has always done: showing up, commanding the stage, and reminding everyone why she is one of the defining artists of her generation. Thursday night in Beverly Hills was just the latest proof.
