Jessica Biel Just Signed On to Play Hugh Hefner’s Wife in a Searchlight Movie, and the True Story Behind the Film Is Even Wilder

Jessica Biel is having the kind of week most actors only dream about. One night she is walking the red carpet at the New York premiere of her new movie with her husband cheering her on. The next morning, the trades are reporting that she has just landed one of the most talked-about roles of the year: the fictional wife of Hugh Hefner in Searchlight Pictures’ new drama “Playmates.”

And here is the twist that makes this story so fascinating. The movie is not a biopic. It is a coming-of-age story inspired by a childhood spent inside the most famous mansion in Hollywood history, and it is being directed by a woman who lived that childhood.

What we know about “Playmates” so far

According to Deadline, Biel will play a former Playboy Playmate turned wife of Hugh Hefner, who is being portrayed by Bill Pullman. Pullman’s casting as Hefner was announced last month when Searchlight acquired the project.

Before anyone starts playing casting detective, the details are clear: Biel’s character is completely fictional. Hefner was married three times in real life, to Mildred Williams, Kimberley Conrad, and Crystal Harris, and the trades report that Biel’s role is not modeled on any of the three. She is playing a character created for the script, not a recreation of a real person.

The official logline centers on Elle, played by Indiana Elle, a 13-year-old know-it-all who treats the Playboy Mansion as her second home. During her time at the mansion, Elle meets Anna, played by Lily-Rose Depp, one of seven hopefuls competing to become Playmate of the Month. The two girls come from completely different worlds, but they form an unlikely friendship. Anna wants a magazine cover. Elle wants a boy. Together, they try to help each other get what they want most.

The director lived this story

The reason “Playmates” feels so different from every other Playboy Mansion project is the filmmaker behind it. The film is the feature writing and directorial debut of Lorraine Nicholson, the daughter of legendary actor Jack Nicholson and actress Rebecca Broussard. Nicholson loosely based the story on her own experiences growing up around the Playboy Mansion.

Nicholson has written about that unusual childhood before. In an essay for W magazine, she described Los Angeles as the “status-anxiety capital of the world” and recalled her friendship with Hugh Hefner’s children, Marston and Cooper. In a detail that has stuck with everyone who read it, she called the mansion “such a place of innocence, paradoxically,” explaining that she was regularly swimming in the grotto as a kid and had no idea about the other side of the mansion’s reputation by night. She had her first movie experience at 13, cast as an extra in her father’s film Something’s Gotta Give because she wanted to be an actor.

She previously wrote and directed the short film Life Boat, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival, and she is a graduate of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women.

Why Jessica Biel is the right choice right now

The timing of this announcement could not be better for Biel. She has spent the past few years quietly rebuilding her screen career, and the momentum is finally showing.

Her recent limited series The Better Sister on Prime Video, in which she executive produced and starred opposite Elizabeth Banks, reminded audiences of what she can do with dark, layered material. That series followed her career-best work on USA Network’s The Sinner, which earned her an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations. Through her Iron Ocean production banner, she has also executive produced series like Cruel Summer and Limetown.

This week she also returned to the big screen after nine years away from movies. She attended the New York premiere of “Matchbox: The Movie” at AMC Lincoln Square on October 5, where her husband Justin Timberlake showed up to support her. The film, which co-stars John Cena, begins streaming on Apple TV on October 9, 2026. During her press run, she told E! News that her sons Silas, 11, and Phineas, 6, are excited about the film, and that the driving stunts she learned for the role finally impressed them. She joked that she is not exactly ripping donuts at school drop off, but she likes knowing the skills are in her back pocket.

A dramatic role in a prestige Searchlight picture is exactly the kind of project that could take that comeback to another level.

Lily-Rose Depp’s year keeps getting bigger

Biel’s co-star Lily-Rose Depp is having her own remarkable run. The actress, who is the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, keeps landing roles that push her into new territory. In “Playmates,” she plays Anna, the aspiring Playmate whose ambitions sit at the heart of the story.

What happens next

No production start date or release date has been announced yet, and that is probably a good sign. Searchlight is the studio behind some of the most carefully crafted prestige films of the past decade, and a project with this much personal material behind it is not something a filmmaker rushes.

What is certain is that “Playmates” has assembled one of the most interesting ensembles of the year: Bill Pullman stepping into the shoes of a cultural icon, Lily-Rose Depp playing a young woman chasing a magazine cover, Indiana Elle leading a film at the start of her career, and now Jessica Biel joining as the wife at the center of the mansion’s domestic life. It is the kind of casting announcement that makes you sit up and pay attention.

The coming weeks are stacked for star-driven projects. Biel’s Matchbox arrives on Apple TV on October 9, the same day Ben Affleck’s new thriller Animals hits Netflix and select theaters. And the calendar only gets busier from there, with Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday landing in December.

For now, all eyes are on the Playboy Mansion. And for the first time, the woman telling the story is someone who actually grew up there.
