Simu Liu Just Got Married in France, and the Taylor Swift Twist Behind His Proposal Will Melt Your Heart
The Shang-Chi star is officially off the market. Simu Liu married longtime love Allison Hsu in France over the weekend of October 3, nearly four years after the couple first got together.
TMZ broke the news on October 5, and a source later confirmed the nuptials to PEOPLE. Details about the ceremony itself are still under wraps. Neither Liu nor Hsu has shared photos from the big day yet, which only has fans more desperate for a glimpse.
But here is what we do know. And honestly, their love story reads like a Hollywood script.
How It Started: Late 2022
Liu, 37, and Hsu, 30, were first romantically linked in late 2022. They went Instagram official on November 20, 2022, and made their red carpet debut together just days later at the Los Angeles premiere of Violent Night on November 29.
It did not take long for Liu to know he had found something special. In an August 2023 interview with PEOPLE, he said Hsu had “absolutely changed my life” and that he was “very, very grateful” to have her. A few months later, in November 2023, he told the outlet he felt a “breath of relief” after finding her.
“We have been tremendously happy,” he said at the time. “I feel challenged and loved and cared for, and I feel championed. I think the best, healthiest relationships are ones where you have each other’s back, and I definitely feel like that’s the case.”
The Paris Proposal (With a Little Help From Taylor Swift)
After dating for almost three years, Liu popped the question on May 11, 2025, during a romantic trip to Paris. The proposal photos, shared in a joint Instagram post, showed the couple on a balcony with the Eiffel Tower in the background and a lavish candlelit floral display.
Hsu showed off her sparkling diamond ring with the caption “Us forever.” Liu added his own words: “From weekends in Paris, day trips to Palm Springs, long nights on set, afternoons vegging on the couch and everything in between, I choose you forever and always.”
But the sweetest detail came later. Liu revealed on The Tonight Show that he pulled off one more surprise: a personal video message from Taylor Swift. Since Hsu works in music and is a longtime Swiftie, Liu reached out to Swift through her publicist to ask for a short congratulations video.
“She literally, two days later, sent it over,” Liu said. “Taylor Swift was the cherry on top.”
Who Is Allison Hsu?
Hsu is not just a Hollywood plus-one. She is a music industry powerhouse in her own right. She joined Interscope Records as an intern in 2017 while attending UCLA, worked her way up, and was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 music list in 2022. She is now vice president of digital marketing at the label.
After the Forbes honor, she wrote on Instagram that she was “honored to be recognized as a young Asian-American woman in this industry” she had dreamed of joining as a little girl growing up in Pennsylvania.
In December 2025, she called the engagement “the best day of 2025” and said the “best year” was ahead of her. And just last month, on September 1, she posted photos from her bachelorette party, a clear sign the wedding countdown was on.
Why the Timing Makes Sense
Liu has a massive year ahead. He is set to return as Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters this December. Sneaking in a romantic French wedding before the press tour storm makes perfect sense.
