Keri Russell Just Revealed She Told Matthew Rhys NOT to Thank Her at the Emmys, and Her Reason Is So Sweet

When Matthew Rhys walked off the Emmy stage twice in one night without mentioning his longtime partner Keri Russell, the internet noticed. They have been together for more than a decade. She was sitting right there, cheering him on. And not a single thank you came her way in either speech. Naturally, people assumed the worst. On Thursday, Russell finally set the record straight on Chelsea Handler’s podcast, and the truth is far sweeter than any awards speech.

“Take Me Off Your Plate”: What Keri Actually Said

On the October 8 episode of Dear Chelsea, Russell revealed that leaving her name out of the speeches was her idea from the start. A few days before the ceremony, she could see her partner was wound tight, so she asked him a simple question: what part of the night scared him most? His answer came instantly. Having to speak.

So Russell gave him an out. She told him to take her off his plate. No thanking her, no worrying about her, she knows he loves her and he had far too many people to squeeze into 45 seconds. Handler backed her up, pointing out that plenty of crew members who built a production deserve the microphone time before a partner does. Russell laughed and agreed, saying she would not care if he thanked the dog walker. That minute, she said, was his.

Why His Nerves Were the Real Story

The two of them, Russell explained, are nervous people who visit the awards world rather than living in it. Rhys had just pulled off something historic, and the pressure of two acceptance speeches on live television was eating at him. By removing herself from the thank you list, Russell lifted the one worry she could control.

They even made a pact about it. Russell said they told each other they did not have to thank each other at all. The love part was private. The stage part was for the business people. Thank whoever you want, she said, and the love stays home.

The 2018 Speech That Still Haunts Him

There is a backstory here, and it explains everything. Back in 2018, Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Americans and forgot to mention a few names in his speech. Years later, Russell says, people still give him a hard time about it. According to Russell, people get nuts about this stuff, and she called the whole habit stupid and lame.

That history matters. Rhys knew from experience that thanking the wrong list of people can haunt you for years. So this time around, clearing his partner from his mental checklist was not only sweet, it was strategic. One less name to worry about on stage, and the one name everyone expected was the one who volunteered to step aside.

A Historic Night Worth Every Word

Let us remember what the night actually was. On September 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Rhys made television history. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me. Combined with his 2018 drama win, he became the first person ever to win lead acting Emmys in all three genres.

Widow’s Bay did not stop there. The horror comedy swept the night with 14 awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. And Rhys did it all without preparing a single word. He later told E! News that he had not prepared anything, which is why he “vomited that speech.” Flustered or not, he still remembered to thank the great and good people of Wales, calling them a small but mighty nation. The people back home did not get skipped. Only Keri did, and now we know why.

She Was Cheering From the Same Table

Russell had her own skin in the game that night. She was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat and also picked up a nomination as an executive producer on the series. After the show, she told Extra that the whole table was cheering for Rhys, saying they were all so screaming for him. No jealousy, no cold shoulders, just volume.

That detail changes the whole story. She was not sitting in the audience steaming while her partner ignored her. She was the loudest voice in his corner, watching the man she loves make history, completely unbothered that her name never crossed the microphone.

A Love Story Built Away From the Microphones

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys met on the set of The Americans back in 2012 and have been together since 2014. They share a son, Sam. Russell also has two children from her previous marriage to Shane Deary. Twelve years in, they have built something rare in Hollywood: a relationship that is solid enough that a missing thank you on live television causes zero damage.

That is really the point of the pact they made. The awards world is loud, brief, and forgettable. What they have is quiet and permanent. As Russell put it, they do not need to thank each other. She knows he loves her. The rest of the world can have the speeches.

Award season keeps delivering these little moments. Taylor Swift just turned the Academy Museum Gala into her own Oscar campaign stop (Taylor Swift Just Booked Her Most Prestigious Stage Yet), proving the spotlight never really leaves Hollywood for long.

What This Really Says About Them

Forget the think pieces about celebrity snubs. This was not a snub. It was one partner quietly doing emotional labor so the other could breathe. Russell gave Rhys permission to be selfish with his 45 seconds, and he took her up on it, twice. If that is not love, I do not know what is.
