Paris Hilton Canceled Her Interview for Kim Kardashian’s Biography 17 Times, and Kim Was Reportedly Furious
The friendship between Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton has survived two decades of fame, one legendary fallout, and a reunion that nobody expected. But a new tell all book might have just reopened one of the most famous wounds in Hollywood history.
Jonathan Van Meter, the journalist who spent five years writing Kim Kardashian’s authorized biography, revealed this week that Paris Hilton was the one person who never gave him an interview for the book. And it was not for lack of trying. According to Van Meter, he tried to sit down with Hilton again and again, only to be canceled on not once, not twice, but seventeen times over the course of about four months.
Then, when he told Kim what happened, her reaction said everything.
The Interview That Never Happened
Van Meter opened up about the ordeal in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Friday, ahead of the book’s release on October 27. The biography, titled Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, runs 352 pages and is published by Viking. It is the first fully authorized biography of Kardashian, and nearly every important person in her orbit sat down with the author.
Nearly every person, that is, except Paris.
“Late in the process, I told Kim I should talk to Hilton,” Van Meter said. He was, after all, writing the definitive account of Kardashian’s life. Hilton was not some random name from the past. She was the woman Kim worked for before she was famous, the one who gave her a front row seat to celebrity life.
“Kim checked and said Paris agreed,” Van Meter recalled. But then things got strange. Instead of a simple conversation, Van Meter was told he had to go through Hilton’s publicist to schedule it. That detail caught him off guard, because for everyone else in the book, Kardashian had simply sent a text.
Van Meter did everything by the book. “I sent questions, connected with Paris’ assistant,” he said. And then the interview was canceled. And canceled. And canceled. Seventeen times over about four months, until he finally gave up.
“Eventually I thought the cancellations were more interesting than whatever she’d tell me,” he admitted.
“Kim Was So Mad”
Here is the part that has everyone talking. When Van Meter told Kardashian what had happened, she was not calm about it.
“Kim was so mad when I told her,” Van Meter said. “It seemed to stir up some ancient irritation between them. The creation turning on the creator.”
That last line landed like a bombshell. “The creation turning on the creator” paints Hilton as the star who made Kim famous, now refusing to acknowledge her own creation. It suggests something deeper than a scheduling problem. It suggests old wounds.
Even earlier this month, in an interview with CULTURED magazine published October 6, Van Meter had already hinted at the friction. He recalled Kardashian’s response to the news as a single word: “Ugh.”
For someone who has built an empire on controlling her image, that “Ugh” says a lot. Hilton was not just any source. She was there at the beginning. She knew Kim before the fame, before the cameras, before SKIMS and the billions. Having her sit out of the authorized story of Kim’s life leaves a hole no one else can fill.
But Wait, Paris’s Side Has a Very Different Story
Before anyone declares the friendship officially dead, it is worth noting that Hilton’s camp is pushing back hard on this narrative.
A source close to Hilton told Page Six that it is simply not true that Kardashian is angry with her. The source said the two women are both involved in each other’s upcoming projects and continue to support one another, as they always have.
Over at TMZ, another source close to Hilton went further, insisting that Kardashian was “absolutely not mad” about the situation. An unnamed Hilton source told PEOPLE that a former assistant had handled the interview arrangements, and blamed the repeated cancellations on Hilton’s packed schedule and constant travel rather than any intentional snub.
And honestly, that explanation has some weight to it. Hilton’s calendar is famously chaotic, and four months of rescheduling could easily be the result of a busy life rather than a deliberate dodge. Seventeen cancellations sounds dramatic, but anyone who has ever tried to pin down a celebrity for an interview knows how these things go.
Page Six says it has reached out to representatives for both Kardashian and Hilton for comment. So far, neither star has addressed the story publicly.

A Friendship With More Layers Than Anyone Remembers
To understand why this story hits such a nerve, you have to go back to the beginning. Before Keeping Up With the Kardashians premiered in 2007, before the tape, before the empire, Kim Kardashian worked as Paris Hilton’s stylist and closet organizer in the early 2000s. She even appeared on Hilton’s reality series The Simple Life, standing in the background of the world she would soon take over.
Then came 2007, the explosion of Kim’s fame, and the slow unraveling of the friendship. By 2008, things had turned openly hostile. Hilton made a now infamous remark about Kardashian’s figure on a radio show, describing her backside as “cottage cheese inside a big trash bag.” It was the kind of insult that does not get forgotten, and for years the two operated in completely different orbits.
But Hollywood has a short memory and a long nostalgia cycle. The two eventually reconciled, and the reunion surprised everyone. Hilton even appeared in campaigns for Kardashian’s shapewear brand SKIMS, a full circle moment that seemed to put the past behind them. They were photographed together at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, looking like old friends who had finally made peace with history.
Which is why Van Meter’s claim stings. If the reconciliation was real, why would Hilton bail on the book? And if it was just scheduling chaos, why did Kim react with such clear irritation?

What Happens Next
Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future hits shelves on October 27, and the Paris Hilton chapter, or the lack of one, is already the most talked about detail in the press.
So the question remains: was it a scheduling disaster, or a quiet snub? For two women whose friendship has survived public insults, reality TV empires, and twenty years of fame, it would take more than a missed interview to break them.
Probably.
