Miley Cyrus Just Broke Down in Tears Singing “Jolene” for Dolly Parton, and the Story Behind It Will Give You Chills
Miley Cyrus walked out onto the Hollywood Bowl stage on Friday night for the first time in four years, and she turned the most important comeback of her career into something nobody in that sold out crowd will ever forget. Midway through her set, she put the music on hold, got honest about the woman who meant everything to her, and sang Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” through tears.
This was not just another concert. For Miley, it was a homecoming stacked on top of a goodbye.
Her First Real Concerts in Four Years
Let us start with what this night actually meant for Miley as an artist. She headlined two sold out nights at the Hollywood Bowl, Friday October 16 and Sunday October 18, 2026. According to SeatGeek, these were her first performances ever at the iconic venue, and her first public concerts since 2022. Her last full show was all the way back in Mexico, where she played in front of more than 150,000 people.
Hours before the curtain went up, Miley told her followers exactly how much it meant. “Opening night at the Hollywood Bowl is here,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a black and white carousel showing the venue marquee advertising BASS PERSUADES LIVE with a SOLD OUT sign. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play such an iconic venue. I’ve spent so many unforgettable nights watching the greats. Excited to make it my own.”
And here is the twist nobody expected. One of those unforgettable nights she spent watching the greats at the Hollywood Bowl? That was the night she went to see Dolly Parton. And it would become the most emotional story of the entire weekend.
The One Night She Saw Dolly Perform
Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, after a battle with cancer. She was not just a legend to Miley. She was her godmother. Billy Ray Cyrus got to know Parton years ago after opening for her on tour, and eventually asked her to take on the godmother role. The two women were genuinely close, so what Miley revealed next hit the entire Bowl like a wave.
Standing in the same venue, Miley told the crowd that even though she and Dolly shared a deep bond, she had only ever seen Dolly perform once in her entire life as a fan. Just once. And that show took place at the Hollywood Bowl.
Then came the part that made 17,500 people hold their breath. Dolly had wanted Miley to come up on stage and perform with her that night. But Miley said no, and her reason says everything about how much she respected Dolly as an artist.
“I said, ‘You know, I would love a night where I can just experience you. I can just enjoy you like the rest of the world has gotten to,'” Miley told the crowd.
Dolly, being Dolly, would not let her off the hook that easily. She opened the concert by singing “Best of Both Worlds.” Yes, the Hannah Montana song. “Yeah, Dolly opened performing Hannah Montana,” Miley said, and the fans at the Bowl erupted. But Dolly was not finished. She then told the crowd that Miley was sitting in the audience and did not want to be bothered.
“Which defeated the entire purpose of the conversation that we had just had,” Miley said, getting a laugh out of the crowd.
It is funny now. On Friday night, it was anything but.

“Me and Dolly, We Are Eternal”
What followed was the rawest few minutes of Miley’s career. Her voice cracking, she told the crowd what Dolly’s presence still means to her, even now.
“Like so many things Dolly did that I didn’t understand at the time, sitting here with you all right now, feeling her all around me, knowing she’s right here beside me every day, all the time, more than she ever could be when she was physically here, I feel her more now than ever. And knowing that I get to share this story with you all makes that night so worth it,” she said.
Then the line that broke the whole Bowl: “This memory is gold to me. Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart, and I’m gonna see her again.”
She could barely finish. “And I can’t wait, because I miss her,” she said through tears.
Then she sang “Jolene,” one of Dolly’s most beloved songs, while a photo of the country legend lit up the stage behind her. “Some of the greatest music that we have today was written, produced, performed by my Aunt Dolly,” she told the crowd. “This is one of those songs.”
A Comeback Album, New Faces, and an 18 Song Set
The tribute landed in the middle of a night that was already historic for Miley. Both Bowl shows promoted her brand new album “Bass Persuades,” which dropped on September 18, and the songs from it were performed live for the very first time. The experimental rock band Model/Actriz opened both nights, and The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne joined her onstage for performances of “Do You Realize??” and “Karen Don’t Be Sad.” All told, Friday’s set ran 18 songs deep.
For an artist whose new album has had a rocky start on the charts (we covered its record breaking Billboard second week drop here), these two nights were about proving something no chart can measure. Both nights were sold out, and so was the moment.

Why This Tribute Matters
Celebrity tributes happen every week. This one was different because it was so deeply personal, and so perfectly full circle. Miley dreamed of playing the Hollywood Bowl. The one time she watched her godmother perform there, she turned down the stage and chose to sit in the dark like a fan. Years later, she finally stood on that same stage, and the person she was performing for was the one she had been watching all along.
Dolly opened with Hannah Montana. Miley closed the circle with “Jolene.” Some stories write themselves.
Miley’s father is having quite the chapter of his own right now too, with his engagement to Elizabeth Hurley making headlines this week. But on Friday night, the spotlight belonged entirely to two women and one eternal bond. “Me and Dolly, we are eternal,” Miley said. “Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart.”
She is right. Some voices never really leave the Bowl.
