Prince William Just Stunned the Graham Norton Show Audience With a Surprise Appearance, and It Is a First in the Show’s History
You can spend years working in show business and never see a studio audience react the way Graham Norton’s crowd did this week. The host was mid-conversation, deep into a discussion about the environment with three of his guests, when he did something the long-running BBC show has never done before. He turned to the wings, invited someone to join the sofa, and out walked the future King.
Prince William, the Prince of Wales, made a surprise appearance on The Graham Norton Show, and in doing so he became the first member of the Royal Family ever to sit on Norton’s famous red sofa. The episode, a special Earthshot Prize edition of the chat show, airs tonight, Friday 23 October, at 10:40pm on BBC One.
The Gasp Heard Around the Studio
According to reports from the recording, the audience gasped as William casually walked out on stage. The Prince of Wales, 44, did not arrive with fanfare or a big introduction. He simply appeared, greeted with cheers, and took his seat alongside a star-studded sofa.
The guests sharing the couch with him were no strangers to the spotlight either. Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett was there, fresh off talking about her new play Electra/Persona, in which she plays alternating roles with Nina Hoss. Ted Lasso favourite Hannah Waddingham, 52, joined the group, along with wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, 22, the son of the late Steve Irwin. Singer-songwriter Jorja Smith also appeared on the show, performing her current single Dancing.
What makes the lineup especially neat is that every guest on the sofa is connected to the same cause. Blanchett sits on the Earthshot Prize Council. Waddingham hosted the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards in Singapore. Irwin serves as a global ambassador for the prize. And the prize itself? That is William’s own creation.
Why He Was There: The Earthshot Prize
The Earthshot Prize was founded by William in 2020 with a mission to celebrate and scale the solutions that will repair the planet. The prize reportedly took its inspiration from US President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot project. Instead of racing to the moon, it challenges innovators to solve five enormous environmental problems, known as Earthshots: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate.
Five winners are chosen each year, and each takes home one million pounds. This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony in Mumbai in November. Last year’s awards were held in Rio de Janeiro, where attendees included Kylie Minogue, Shawn Mendes, then Prime Minister Keir Starmer, then Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
On the show, William explained what drove him to create the prize in the first place, and his answer was refreshingly honest. He said he had spent years hearing stories about environmental issues, and that the negativity and doom of it all got him down. He wanted something more powerful and more optimistic, and the idea of an awards ceremony came to him, a place where urgency and optimism could be talked about together. As he put it, it is all about getting excited.
He added that there are amazing people out there doing things to protect the world, and that the prize could highlight what is being done and scale it to the next level, creating more impact around the world. The guests echoed the sentiment. Blanchett described the initiative as a tapestry of solutions, while Waddingham praised the support the prize gives its finalists, helping connect innovators with the expertise, networks and investment they need to grow.
The Lighter Side: Traitors, Trilogies and the Big Red Chair
It was not all serious business. The red sofa gave William room to show a more relaxed side, and Norton wasted no time drawing it out of him. The prince revealed he is a fan of Celebrity Traitors, and that his children are fans too. Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, he said, are obsessed with it.
That confession came with a story. William said he ran into Ross Kemp the day after the first episode aired and could not resist, in what he called the most appropriate way, giving him a touch just to see what reaction he would get. Kemp, it turns out, was really jumpy.
He also opened up about how he winds down at the end of the day, saying he likes getting immersed in deep-thinking films. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is among his favourites. He called himself a big fan of everything Nolan does, saying the director takes concepts that are completely out there and makes them incredibly entertaining.
Football fans got their moment too. William confirmed his support for Aston Villa, and he helped judge who survived the infamous Big Red Chair, the segment where the least entertaining storyteller gets tipped backwards.
How It All Came Together
The appearance was kept under wraps until the recording. Norton had already started discussing the Earthshot Prize with Blanchett, Waddingham and Irwin when he invited William to join them, and the Prince and Princess of Wales Instagram account later shared photos from the sofa. The caption told followers William was joining the iconic red sofa for a very special Earthshot edition of the show, and pointed them to BBC One at 10:40pm tonight.
For the show, which debuted in 2007, it is a genuine milestone. Royals have sat for plenty of television interviews over the years, but never on Graham Norton’s red sofa, and never alongside a Hollywood star, a beloved sitcom favourite and the heir to the Crocodile Hunter legacy.
Next week’s guests, barring any more surprise royal appearances, are set to include Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Naomi Ackie and the Sugababes.
William’s Earthshot Prize is now approaching the midpoint of its ten-year mission. A relaxed chat show appearance cannot replace a policy summit, but it can do something those summits rarely manage: carry an optimistic environmental message to viewers who would never otherwise tune in. Tonight, millions of them will be watching.
