Cher Just Answered Michael Douglas After He Said Glenn Close Deserved Her 1988 Oscar, and Four Words Ended the Whole Debate

It took Michael Douglas less than a minute on a BBC sofa to reopen one of the oldest debates in Oscar history. Then it took Cher just four words to close it again.

Douglas was sitting on the famous red sofa of The Graham Norton Show on Friday, October 30, 2026, alongside Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin and Naomi Ackie, when the conversation turned to Close and her long, strange relationship with the Academy Awards. Close has been nominated eight times and has never won a competitive Oscar. Douglas, her co-star from the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction, was not about to let that pass without saying something. What he said set off a small storm, and Cher’s answer was the calmest possible reply.

What Michael Douglas actually said on Graham Norton

Douglas was on the show to talk about his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, but the night belonged to the reunion with Close. The two had not shared a stage like this in years, and the warmth between them was obvious from the moment they sat down. When Norton brought up Close’s Oscar record, Douglas did not hesitate.

“She should have won with Fatal Attraction,” he said, referring to Close’s performance as Alex Forrest, the book editor whose affair with Douglas’s married character Dan Gallagher turns obsessive and then terrifying.

Douglas went further. He called Close’s work in the film “one of the greatest performances of all time,” and he pointed out that it was already her fourth Oscar nomination when she lost. Her first three had come in consecutive years, for The World According to Garp in 1983, The Big Chill in 1984 and The Natural in 1985.

Close herself tried to keep it light. “Michael, be kind!” she said, laughing, as the audience joined in. But Douglas was not finished. When Norton joked that Cher had won the award partly because she “put some gray in her hair” for her role in Moonstruck, Douglas answered with a grin: “I know. That’s what we all said.”

It was a joke, delivered with a smile, between two old friends. But on the internet, a joke like that travels fast, and within days it had become a story about a feud that did not actually exist.

The night Cher beat Glenn Close

To understand why the comment landed the way it did, you have to go back to the 60th Academy Awards in 1988. Cher won Best Actress for Moonstruck, the romantic comedy in which she played Loretta Castorini, a widowed bookkeeper from Brooklyn who falls for her fiance’s younger brother. It remains one of the most loved wins of that decade.

The competition that year was brutal. Alongside Close, the nominees were Holly Hunter for Broadcast News, Sally Kirkland for Anna and Meryl Streep for Ironweed. That is exactly why the debate has never really gone away. Douglas, it is worth remembering, was not an outsider that night. He won Best Actor at the same ceremony for his turn as Gordon Gekko in Wall Street. He was in the room, he watched Cher take the stage, and nearly four decades later he still thinks his friend should have been the one holding the statue.

Four words from Cher

When the story reached Cher, she did not fire back. She did not post a long statement, and she did not let anyone else turn it into a fight. Her representative gave Page Six a four word response that ended the whole conversation before it could become one.

“Cher adores Michael Douglas.”

That was it. No defence of her own win, no dig at Douglas, no mention of Close at all. Just a simple, warm statement about a man she has known for decades. It was the perfect answer, because there was nothing to answer. Douglas had not attacked Cher. He had praised his friend. And Cher, at 80, has been famous long enough to know the difference between an insult and a loyal friend speaking up for someone he loves.

The response also fits everything people know about Cher. She has never been someone who needs to defend her trophy case. Her Oscar sits alongside a Grammy, an Emmy and three Golden Globes, and her career has spanned music, film and television for more than six decades. A playful comment on a British chat show was never going to shake that.

Why Glenn Close is getting her Oscar anyway

Here is the part of the story that makes Douglas’s loyalty feel less like a complaint and more like a celebration. Close is finally getting her Oscar. She will receive an Honorary Award from the Academy at the Governors Awards in November 2026, and she joked about it herself on the Norton sofa.

“I am getting one this year, it is honorary,” she said. “I kind of hate to break my losing streak!” She added that the members of the Academy “probably don’t want to feel guilty anymore.”

Eight nominations without a win is a record nobody wants, and the honorary award is the Academy’s way of saying what Douglas said on television: this career deserved a statue a long time ago. Close’s nominations stretch from the early 1980s to 2021, when she was nominated for Hillbilly Elegy. The honorary Oscar will not erase the losses, but it will put a golden statue in her hands at last.

A friendship that has lasted nearly 40 years

Part of what made the Graham Norton moment so charming was how clearly Douglas and Close still enjoy each other. Douglas revealed on the show that the filmmakers had not originally thought Close was right for Alex Forrest. She insisted on auditioning anyway, and, in his words, she “blew us away. We had never been so wrong in our lives. We were idiots.”

That is the kind of story only a real friend tells, and it explains why Douglas spoke up for her on live television. After the show, he posted a photo of the two of them on the red sofa and called it “one helluva reunion with my Fatal Attraction co-star and dear friend.” His memoir, One Helluva Ride, has already made headlines for its revelations, including a secret affair with his Romancing the Stone co-star Kathleen Turner, and on the show he said he wrote the book now because, at 82, “I thought it was probably time.”

So is there a feud?

No. There is a loyal friend, a gracious icon and a brilliant actress who is about to get her Oscar at last. Cher adores Michael Douglas. Douglas adores Glenn Close. And Close, for her part, seems perfectly happy to take her honorary award in November and laugh about the whole thing.

Sometimes a Hollywood story is exactly what it looks like. This one is three legends, one old trophy and a joke on a Friday night that turned into the most good natured non feud of the year. Douglas reminded the world, again, that her performance in Fatal Attraction was one of the great ones. And Cher’s four words reminded everyone that class never goes out of style.
