Scarlett Johansson Just Earned a Five-Timers Club Robe on Today, and Her Reaction Was Pure Delight

Some morning show moments are planned down to the second. This one was not supposed to be a ceremony at all. Scarlett Johansson turned up on NBC’s Today on Thursday, November 5, to talk about her new film, and she walked out with a robe, a title, and one of the sweetest surprises morning television has served up in a while.

By the end of the segment, the Oscar-nominated actress was standing in front of the weather map in a bright orange robe, doing the forecast like she had been doing it for years. In a way, she has. This was her fifth time presenting the weather alongside Al Roker, and Roker decided that milestone deserved its own tradition.

A robe, a thunderbolt, and a very big number five

Johansson, 41, started the morning the usual way, sitting down with Savannah Guthrie for an interview. Then the segment took a turn. Roker stepped in and asked her to join him at the forecast map, just as she has done before. Only this time, he had something waiting for her.

“This is your fifth time,” Roker, 72, told her, holding up an orange robe with a thunderbolt motif on the back and a big number 5 on the front. “Much like they do on SNL, we got you your fifth weather robe.” Guthrie could not resist chiming in with the obvious: “Five-Timers Club!”

Johansson hugged Roker, clearly touched, and held the robe up for the cameras. “How chic,” she said, admiring the design. Then, with the kind of question only she would ask on live television: “Can I wear this out?” Roker did not hesitate. “Yes!”

It was a playful nod to one of television’s most famous clubs. On Saturday Night Live, anyone who hosts the show five times receives a velvet robe as a member of the Five-Timers Club. Johansson knows that ritual well. She joined the club in 2017 as its 17th member and received the show’s quintessential robe jacket that year. Now she has a matching honor on morning television, just in a louder color and with a weather map instead of a monologue.

Her forecast was better than the actual weather

Once the robe was on, Johansson went straight into weatherwoman mode, and she was clearly enjoying herself. Florida, she announced, was the place to be. “Florida is where you want to be right now. That looks nice and roasty toasty,” she said, pointing out temperatures in the 80s. The Gulf Coast, she added, had some “nice weather happening all up in this situation.”

The Western Plains were dealing with chilly temperatures, and the Northeast was in for heavy showers. Roker stepped in to note that the rain was actually needed, since it has “been so dry” up there. Johansson agreed at once. “It’s been so dry,” she said. “We’re so happy that there’s rain up there!”

The pair wrapped the segment the way all great double acts do, trading lines with a smile. Roker said, “That’s what’s going on around the country,” and Johansson followed with, “Here’s what’s happening in your neck of the woods.” Roker summed it up as they finished: “This was the best fifth weather ever.”

This was not her first time at the weather map

What makes the robe so fitting is that Johansson’s weather career on Today goes back years. Her first attempts at the gig came in 2012 and again in 2022, and she returned to the map in 2023, when Roker joked that the whole thing had become something of a “tradition.” Each visit added to the running joke, and by Thursday, the joke had become an official honor.

It is the kind of long-running bit that morning television does best: a small, silly tradition that builds over years until it becomes a moment viewers actually look forward to. Johansson has never treated it as a throwaway gag, either. She leans into the forecast, plays with the language, and lets the audience in on the fun.

She was there to talk about Paper Tiger, but the boat stole a scene too

The weather was not the only reason Johansson was in the studio. She was on Today to talk about Paper Tiger, her new crime thriller, including the work she put into building the accent for her role. The film gives her another chance to show the range that has carried her from blockbusters to intimate dramas, and the accent work was clearly something she enjoyed digging into.

But the interview had one more detour that had the studio laughing. Guthrie asked about the boat Johansson’s husband, Colin Jost, bought with Saturday Night Live costar Pete Davidson back in 2022, with the goal of turning the vessel into a destination for live entertainment.

“How’s the Staten Island Ferry going?” Guthrie asked. Johansson did not miss a beat. “In which way?” she joked. “It’s still around. So far it’s available for Bat Mitzvahs, if you have an engagement party. What we need is dollars. The docking fees are steep.”

Jost has been honest about his wife’s role in the project, telling PEOPLE she is “very supportive from a distance” and adding, “I mean, I wouldn’t say she’s an active investor.” He has also joked that she might one day come around to life aboard the vessel, saying she would love “to retire on this ferry, you know? If that’s what puts her over the edge, I’m hopeful.”

Why this little moment landed so well

There is a reason a weather segment is getting talked about the morning after. Johansson has spent her career being taken very seriously, and she deserves it. She is an Oscar nominee, a Tony winner, and one of the biggest movie stars of her generation. But moments like this one show the other side of her: the guest who says yes to the silly bit, who laughs at herself, and who treats a morning show tradition like it actually matters.

Roker understood that. The robe was not just a prop. It was a thank you for showing up, year after year, and playing along. And Johansson’s reaction, that mix of surprise and genuine delight, is why the clip is being shared so widely. She did not act above it. She put the robe on, pointed at Florida, and did the job.

Morning television runs on moments like this. A star arrives to promote a film, and somewhere between the interview and the forecast, something real happens. Johansson now owns two Five-Timers robes, one from sketch comedy and one from morning TV. Not a bad haul for a Thursday.
