Robert Downey Jr. and Pedro Pascal Just Swapped Marvel Roles for Halloween, and the MIT Sweatshirt Has Fans Losing It

Some Halloween costumes are just costumes. This one was a statement, a joke, and a trailer all at once. On Saturday night, October 31, Robert Downey Jr. and Pedro Pascal did not dress up as their own characters. They dressed up as each other.

Downey Jr., 61, put on the blue suit of Reed Richards, better known as Mister Fantastic. Pascal, 51, put on the cape and silver mask of Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom. In other words, the hero became the villain and the villain became the hero, weeks before the two men are set to face off on the big screen in Avengers: Doomsday.

It was the kind of gag that only works because everyone already knows the punchline. Downey spent more than a decade as Iron Man, the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now he is back, but on the other side of the fight. Pascal is the new Mister Fantastic, the brilliant leader of the Fantastic Four. Put them in each other’s clothes and suddenly the whole rivalry feels personal, playful, and a little bit cheeky.

The video that started it all

Downey shared the swap himself on Instagram. The video starts simply enough. He covers his face with his hands. Pascal hides behind the metallic Doom mask. Then, slowly, they drop the act and reveal what they are really wearing.

Downey is in the full Mister Fantastic look, the blue Fantastic Four suit complete with the number 4 on the chest and a chunky white belt. Pascal is in Doom mode, with a green sweatshirt, green pants, a green cape, and the villain’s signature silver mask. As the reveal lands, Downey jokes, “Cross-dressing,” while Pascal bursts into laughter beside him.

His caption said the rest in just a few words: “Victor. Richard. Costume swap!” Fans noticed the wording straight away. He wrote Richard, not Reed, which only added to the fun. Was it a typo, a joke, or Downey being Downey? Nobody has said for sure, and honestly, that is part of the charm.

The pair did not stop at one video. A second clip shows them walking arm in arm through the streets on Halloween night, still fully in character. Downey vogues for the camera. Pascal playfully sticks out his tongue. Later that night, they were spotted arriving at a Halloween party together in Los Angeles, still in their swapped costumes.

Why one sweatshirt sent fans into overdrive

Every great Marvel moment comes with a fan theory attached, and this one arrived fast. Under his Doom cape, Pascal was wearing a grey sweatshirt with the letters MIT on it. Within hours, fans were asking whether that detail was a deliberate clue.

In the comics, Reed Richards and Victor von Doom were brilliant college peers before an accident sent Victor down a much darker path. Their story has always been about two extraordinary minds who started in a similar place and ended up on opposite sides of everything. So when Doom shows up in an MIT sweatshirt, fans could not help but wonder whether the costume was quietly nodding to that shared history.

To be clear, this is fan speculation, not a confirmed Easter egg. Neither actor has said the sweatshirt was meant as a hidden message, and it could simply be part of a comfortable Halloween outfit. But that is exactly why it caught fire. Marvel fans love a detail that might mean something, and a costume swap between these two specific characters is already loaded with meaning.

The wholesome detour nobody expected

The Halloween fun did not end with the swap. Photos shared online later showed Downey and Pascal posing at night with a group of Star Wars fans in costume. There was an adult dressed as a Stormtrooper, a child in Mandalorian armor, and a smaller child dressed as Grogu, complete with a tan robe and big green ears.

According to the posts, Downey called out to the group and invited them to come and meet “the real Mandalorian.” That is Pascal, of course, who plays the bounty hunter Din Djarin in the Star Wars universe. Downey, still in his blue Fantastic Four suit, flashed a peace sign for the photo, while Pascal stood beside the family in a grey sweatshirt and cap.

It is a small moment, but it tells you a lot about why this pairing works. These are two actors who clearly enjoy each other’s company, and who know how to share the spotlight without turning it into a competition. One night they are hero and villain. The next minute they are just two guys making a kid’s Halloween a little more magical. Pascal has had a year full of demanding roles, and this was the opposite: pure, unguarded fun.

What it means for Avengers: Doomsday

The timing is impossible to ignore. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026, and it is shaping up to be one of the biggest movie events of the year. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, it brings together heroes from different corners of the Marvel universe against Downey’s Doctor Doom. More than 30 stars have been confirmed to appear.

Downey shocked the room at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024 when he pulled off a mask on stage and announced his return with the line, “New mask, same task.” It was a brilliant piece of theater, and it set up the central question of Doomsday: what happens when the man who once saved the universe comes back as the man trying to rule it?

Pascal first played Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025, and he returns as the character in Doomsday. At a group interview during Comic-Con in 2026, he said his character will not take responsibility for the havoc that Doom unleashes on the world. That is a telling line, and it hints at just how tense the Reed and Doom dynamic could be on screen.

Why this costume worked so well

Halloween 2026 had no shortage of big celebrity costumes. Heidi Klum turned herself into a giant severed hand, and plenty of stars went for elaborate transformations. But the Downey and Pascal swap stood out for a simpler reason: it was clever rather than just expensive.

For fans counting down to December 18, the swap did something even better than build hype. It gave them a reason to smile about a movie that is, by all accounts, going to be very serious indeed. Doom is coming. Reed is ready. And for one night in October, they traded places, laughed about it, and walked off into the Halloween crowd arm in arm.

Sources: Entertainment Weekly and People reported the costume swap, the Instagram video, and the December 18 release date for Avengers: Doomsday. More on the road to Doomsday is also on CineVibe.
